Southern Book Bloggers ARC Tours A Tale of Many Reviews

Blog Tours

I am so honored to participate in the Blog Tour for Timekeeper, the sequel to Timeless by Alexandra Monir. Upon finishing Timeless, a book I reviewed and loved several months ago, I was so anxious to know what happened next, and now I can finally find out!

Timekeeper debuts on January 8, 2013. I am currently reading it and let me tell you, folks, it's just as good as Timeless - if not better! My review is forthcoming and I hope it will encourage you to pick up this wonderful series and see what all the fuss is about.

In fact, you'll have a chance to start or continue this series today! Not only do I have an awesome guest piece by Alexandra Monir herself, but I am honored to offer a special giveaway of both Timeless and Timekeeper! (Special thanks to Random house, Alexandra Monir, and AuthorsOnTheWeb.)

So, without further ado, let's focus on the lady of the hour, Ms. Alexandra Monir! As her series is full of rich descriptions of famous, historical places from days of old, she chose to write about one of the places mentioned in Timeless:

The Plaza Hotel

“Michele followed Lily into the beautiful Beaux Arts building, and once inside the Fifth Avenue lobby, with its soaring ceiling and mosaic floor, she was thrilled to be able to see the Plaza in all its 1920s glory. The pomp and grandeur of the hotel served as the perfect backdrop for the Gatsby-esque characters who flitted in and out.” –TIMELESS, pg 210

The Plaza is one of my favorite NYC landmarks, so it was a joy to write the sequence where Michele and her sixteen-year-old great-grandmother, Lily, visit the hotel when Michele travels back in time to 1925. Michele and Lily’s scenes together take place in the middle of Michele’s heartbreak, so as a writer it was really cool to be able to juxtapose the drama and romance with madcap 1920s fun.

I’ve been obsessed with the Roaring Twenties for years; if I could experience any era in history, this would be it! From Gershwin to Fitzgerald, the Cotton Club to the Ziegfeld, so much of New York culture is evocative of this magical Jazz Age. And whenever I think of the 20s, the image that comes to mind is the classic story of F. Scott Fitzgerald and his wife, Zelda, jumping into the fountain outside the magnificent Plaza Hotel. I knew I had to give Michele the opportunity to experience this very place.

I lived in NYC while working on Timeless, so I was able to stop by the Plaza a number of times during the writing process—I’d go for a bite or a drink and just immerse myself in the atmosphere. (Fun fact: on book-release day, I went there for a celebratory lunch!) I also read a couple books that helped me learn more about the hotel’s history, such as At the Plaza: An Illustrated History of the World’s Most Famous Hotel, by Curtis Gathje; and Inside the Plaza: An Intimate Portrayal of the Ultimate Hotel, by Ward Morehouse III.

If you get a chance to visit NYC, or if you live nearby, I highly recommend checking out the Plaza. And maybe, just maybe, you’ll see a teenage flapper and her modern-day counterpart dashing inside!

Timeless (January 2011; available in hardcover, trade paperback and e-book editions)

When tragedy strikes Michele Windsor’s world, she is forced to uproot her life and move across the country to New York City, to live with the wealthy, aristocratic grandparents she’s never met. And she finds herself falling for him, into an otherworldly, time-crossed romance.

Timekeeper (January 8, 2013; available in hardcover and e-book editions)

This sequel to Timeless combines breathtaking romance with a tale of complex magic in a story that will have every reader believing in the transcendent power of love.

When Philip Walker appears as a new student in Michele Windsor's high school class, she is floored. He is the love she thought she lost forever when they said goodbye during her time travels last century. Overjoyed that they can resume the relationship they had a lifetime ago, Michele eagerly approaches him and discovers the unthinkable: he doesn't remember her. In fact, he doesn't seem to remember anything about the Philip Walker of 1910.

Michele then finds her father's journals, which tell stories of his time-traveling past. As she digs deeper, she learns about his entanglement with a mysterious and powerful organization called the Time Society and his dealings with a vengeful Windsor ancestor. Michele soon finds herself at the center of a rift over 120 years in the making, one whose resolution will have life-or-death consequences.

The Timeless/Timekeeper Giveaway!

a Rafflecopter giveaway

I am so excited and honored to be part of the Hyperion Blog Tour for TIME BETWEEN US, the debut young adult contemporary by Tamara Ireland Stone.

Today, you will find a fantastic interview with the lovely Tamara Ireland Stone herself, a fun playlist/soundtrack "created by" the the book's two main characters, as well as a generous giveaway of a finished copy of TIME BETWEEN US for one lucky reader! Keep reading for all the goodies!

1. What made you choose 1995 and 2012 as the featured time periods in Time Between Us?

I initially knew my time traveler would be from present day San Francisco. I planned to make him seventeen, so when I didt the math, that set his birthday in 1995.

I wanted Anna to be sixteen, but from a completely different city. In 1995, I happened to be living in Evanston, Illinois. The idea of going back there in my mind and re-experiencing it was so intriguing.

When I put those two dates and locations together, it just felt right. How interesting to think about how much has changed between 1995 and 2012! The world is so different today than it was only seventeen years ago, when the Internet and cell phones were in their infancy. And those two cities—San Francisco, California and Evanston, Illinois—were two beautiful, but very diverse settings I knew firsthand. It all clicked.

2. What was the most interesting point of research for your story?

I’ve always been drawn to time travel stories. As a kid I loved everything from A Wrinkle in Time to Back to the Future, and today, I’m find myself on the edge of my seat for movies like Source Code and Looper. I’ve been fascinated by how books and movies approach time travel differently, but I’d never thought to research it until I started writing this book,

And then I found myself drawn to it in a different way. I spent many late nights reading about string theory and the many worlds theory and the fourth dimension. The research sometimes made my brain hurt, but I found myself totally fascinated by what the world’s biggest thinkers had to say about the possibility of time travel.

I also realized how much I loved research. In addition to time travel theories, I got to learn more about migraines and cross-country running and rock climbing technique. I got to research concerts around the world and 90s hairstyles. I found the research to be as much fun as the writing.

3. Is there a character you're most or least similar to? What are the similarities/differences?

Anna Greene and I are a lot alike: Driven, goal setters, big dreamers, overachievers. But she is a lot more confident and decisive than I was at that age. I think of Anna as the 16-year-old girl I wish I had been, and the 16-year-old girl I hope my daughter grows up to be.

There’s also a lot of me in Bennett. He feels unsettled in his life, and because my family moved a lot when I was growing up, I used to feel that way a lot as a teen.

I had a lot of introspective moments while writing this book. Today, I have the roots that Bennett wanted and Anna’s confidence. But like every character’s evolution, there was a journey involved in getting there.

4. What message do you hope readers take from Time Between Us?

On the surface, this looks like a fun escapism story about time travel, world travel, and romance. But there’s a lot more going on below the surface and I really hope readers experience that too.

I’m so proud of Anna. She starts out strong, and after a series of events—uplifting, heartbreaking, and life changing—she ends up even stronger. I wanted readers to feel empowered by her story. We each make choices that affect our future selves every day, and whether those choices turn out to be right or wrong, there's great power and the fact that they’re ours. Ultimately, this is a story about choosing your path and living without regrets.

5. If you could travel back in time, where would you go, who would you see, and what would you do?

The inspiration for this story came from something I said to my husband. I wished I could go back in time to see concerts I missed. How cool would it be to see Nirvana live, or see Green Day when they were playing in small clubs in the early 90s? I don’t need to go back and relive any part of my life, but going back for a few hours for some epic live music? That I’d do.

Since music is such a big part of Tamara's life, she created a playlist -or rather, a soundtrack- from the "viewpoint" of Bennett and Anna that spans 1991 through present-day. I must say, it's a pretty fabulous playlist, chock full of some of my personal favorites, from Green Day to Lifehouse to Incubus. Click to check out the Time Between Us Playlist/Soundtrack!

I am so excited to be part of the Tor Teen Blog Tour for THE BOOK OF THE NIGHT, the third and final installment in the Libyrinth Series by Pearl North.

Today, you will find a fantastic guest post from Pearl North herself on the importance of libraries in our culture, as well as a generous giveaway of a finished copy of THE BOOK OF THE NIGHT for three lucky readers! Keep reading for all the goodies!

Libraries: We Still Need Them! - A Guest Post by Pearl North

Thank you for having me on BlookGirl!

Do we still need Libraries? Well, obviously, since I wrote a whole trilogy of books centered around a library so vast that people sometimes get lost in it and never come out again, my answer is going to be yes.

But let me tell you why that's my answer. Sure, the internet is a terrific research tool, and it's much more convenient to search for what we want online, purchase it online, and then download our books to our ereaders and phones and notebook computers.'

Well, we can if we own a computer and an ereader and a phone. And of course, not everyone does.

But most libraries do. People with no other access to the internet depend on libraries for free internet access. And not every book is available online or in digital format and even if it were, people without money need access to books too. Probably more than the rest of us. And finally, sometimes you need a safe, quiet place to go for a little while.

So while print books may or may not continue to be vital to our society (it is true that print on paper is more durable than digital files), libraries will continue to be important for a whole host of reasons, including the ones I mentioned above.

Why do you think libraries are important, or aren't?

Pearl North is the author of a trilogy of YA science fiction novels: Libyrinth, The Boy From Ilysies (a Norton Award Finalist), and The Book of the Night.

Libyrinth follows the story of Haly, a Libyrarian dedicated to preserving and protecting the knowledge passed down from the Ancients and stored in the endless maze of books known as the Libyrinth. But Haly has a secret: the books speak to her. When she is captured by the Singers, a group hostile to the Libyrinth who believe the written word to be evil, Haly learns that things are not at all as they seem. Can she mend the rift between the two groups before war destroys them all?

In The Boy from Ilysies, the Libyrinth is quickly running out of food, and the survival of the ancient edifice and those who serve it may depend on Po, a young man raised in the female dominant society of Ilysia. Po is having trouble adjusting to life in the egalitarian Libyrinth. Caught between his longings for acceptance and the Machiavellian tactics of his queen, Po is tricked into a crime that causes him to be cast out. He may return only if he retrieves the Lion's Bloom, an enormously powerful ancient artifact that may be the answer to all of the libyrinth’s problems. However, in the wrong hands, it could turn the world into a barren, lifeless ruin.

The Libyrinth trilogy concludes with The Book of the Night. The world of the Libyrinth has experienced a series of wrenching changes. Behind the mysteries of its shrouded past has always been the legendary Book of the Night. Sought for generations, both feared and revered, it is the key to this world of wonders. When Queen Thela of Ilysies imperils the very reality of the world, only the Book can heal what she has rent asunder. An epic journey through strange lands, a perilous encounter in a clockwork city, and the revelation of the truth beyond reality will lead Haly, Po, and their friends Clauda and Selene to a moment when their world will either be saved...or cease to exist.

A firm believer in human decency, Pearl North loves writing and reading about characters that transcend the limits of who they think they are and what they think is possible. She mentors graduate students in Seton Hill University’s Writing Popular Fiction MFA program, and writes in other genres under different names. A native and life-long resident of the Detroit area, she has never lived more than two miles from Woodward Avenue in her life.

Her books are available from Amazon (http://amzn.to/O6Tuoc) and fine booksellers everywhere. Or, you can borrow them from the library.

I am excited and honored to be participating in Aimee Carter's THE GODDESS LEGACY tour, brought to you by Kismet Book Tours!

Today on BlookGirl, you will find a fantastic giveaway and so much more! Keep reading, dear reader!

First, let me introduce you to the lady of the hour, author of THE GODDESS LEGACY, Aimee Carter:

Aimée Carter was born and raised in Michigan, where she currently resides. She started writing at age eleven and later attended the University of Michigan, graduating with a degree in screen arts and cultures. Currently she spends her time continuing with The Goddess Test series and working on new projects. You can tweet her at @aimee_carter or catch updates on her website.

Next, I have written a mini review of one of the short stories within THE GODDESS LEGACY, namely The Lovestruck Goddess:

The Lovestruck Goddess is the story of how Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love, really came to be the wife of Hephesteus and the eventual lover of Ares. In this story, we come to really feel for this Aphrodite as she struggles with her feelings for both of the men in her life. She often gets a hard knock amongst the Gods and Goddesses as being able to "have her cake and eat it, too"; however, her history is incredibly romantic and offers great insight into her personality. I really enjoyed witnessing Aphrodite's exploration into the different types of love both mortals and immortals have the capacity to feel and experience. I really feel The Lovestruck Goddess was the best story in THE GODDESS LEGACY Hopefully you'll agree, dear reader!

Finally, as promised, there are some amazing goodies up for grabs in this fabulous giveaway! Thanks to Aimee Carter and Kismet Book Tours, I can offer one of my lovely readers the chance to win a copy of THE GODDESS LEGACY, and a grand prize full of “Goddess Goodies” to be chosen from among all the entries from all of the tour stops!

I am honored today to participate in the Blog Tour for The Madly Series by M. Leighton, organized by AToMR Tours. Here, you will find an excerpt from Madly & The Jackal, the upcoming third installment of the series. I've had the opportunity to read the first two books, Madly (a novella) and Madly & Wolfhardt, and you will see those reviews on BlookGirl shortly. If you enjoy fast-paced paranormal stories that feature powerful mermaids, white-hot romance, and a unique spin on fairy tales, this may just be the series for you!

You can find the novella, Madly, for FREE on BarnesandNoble.com and Amazon.com. This is a great introduction to the series and will likely leave you wanting more!

Once you've read the excerpt below, be sure to check out the GIVEAWAY at the bottom of this post for SIGNED paperbacks of Madly, Madly & Wolfhardt, and Madly & The Jackal, a Swag pack, and a Madly t-shirt. (US/CA only). Also, follow along with the other blogs on the tour. You can find the list here.

Madly is your average nearly-eighteen year old girl—for a princess, that is.

Madly James is thoroughly enjoying her internship in the small town of Slumber when the unthinkable happens—there’s a prison break in Atlas, the magically-protected home of Madly’s race. A traitor has set free eight Lore, the spirits of what humans know as fairy tales, and they are making their way to Slumber to awaken their descendants.

In order to save her home, the lives of her family, and all of humanity, Madly must learn to wield her exceptional powers and recapture the Lore before it’s too late and all is lost. But Madly’s only help are her two best friends and the Sentinel, Jackson Hamilton, that threatens both her heart and her destiny. Madly has loved Jackson as long as she can remember, but he is the one thing even a princess can’t have. Can she resist love to become the queen she was fated to be? Or can she find a way to have both?

An exclusive excerpt from Madly & The Jackal by M. Leighton

I tried to smile brightly, but felt it falter. I reminded myself that if there was anyone who could fix it, it was Jackson. I was fairly certain there was little he couldn’t do if he set his mind to it.

Clinging to that knowledge like a lifeline, Jackson and I stepped out of the cave and into the vastness of the ocean. Within a fraction of a second, our tail fins had reformed and we were speeding through the water. Jackson kept me close to his body as we moved, whether for my comfort or my safety I wasn’t sure. Either way, I appreciated it.

We swam for quite a distance before I began to feel oriented, recognizing several landmarks as we passed. I wondered about the magic used to keep the cave entrance and canyon cloaked. I’d never encountered magic like that before, magic that could be concealed from my bracelet, from my senses. I concluded that it had to be ancient magic, put in place by the older generations, possibly even someone from the High Council.

When Jackson stopped suddenly, all thoughts of that curious magic left my mind, replaced in an instant by the task at hand and the inherent peril of it.

“What’s the matter?” I asked in a hushed voice.

Jackson didn’t respond right away. His sharp blue eyes scanned the waters around us like an eagle scans the sky. I looked out, trying to see what he saw, hear what he heard, feel what he felt. Although nothing seemed out of the ordinary to me, I knew Jackson was sensing something. His tension tickled my nerves from head to toe as if he were strumming them like guitar strings.

“Madly, don’t ask questions. Swim that way,” he said, pointing off to our right. “Don’t stop. Don’t look back. Don’t worry about me. I’ll find you. Just swim. Now!”

Grabbing me around the waist, Jackson gave me a push for a head start before he turned and darted off like a bullet, cutting through the water in the other direction.
Confused and a little scared, I did as he instructed. I ignored the thought that there was only one portal in the shield and that it did not lay in this direction. I ignored the thought that the further Jackson was from me, the harder it would be to maintain his invisibility. I ignored the thought that I wouldn’t know when to summon the whale or if I still needed to. I ignored all my screaming instincts and did only what Jackson asked.

So I swam.

Straining with all my power to keep Jackson’s appearance concealed, I reached out for any whale in the vicinity, thinking absently that I believed I could feel one. Without taking away from Jackson, I let my own visibility shine through just enough that I could confuse the whale and draw it closer then I put my appearance back under wraps. It was all I could do, the best I could hope for.

When the alarms sounded, I wasn’t sure if I had triggered them or if the whale had stumbled into them. I felt the disorienting, debilitating effects of them instantly. I managed to keep enough of my wits about me to pray that Jackson was safe and that he would get away. I wasn’t sure whether it was a good sign or not when the alarms were silenced less than a minute later. I recovered quickly, but it was with great unease that I resumed my swim. How could I get out when the portal lay in the other direction? What if I got trapped? What if…

My thoughts swam faster than I did as I focused on my trust of Jackson. It wasn’t until I began passing the familiar landscape of the waters outside Slumber that I slowed. How had I escaped the shield? Was there another portal?

I had so many questions, but at that moment, none of them mattered. My worries were tightly focused on one thing, one person, as I scanned the shadows of the deep—looking, listening, feeling. Jackson was nowhere. I couldn’t sense him at all.

Swallowing the lump in my throat, I started to swim back toward Atlas when the memory of Jackson’s voice stopped me. It rang clearly in my head, as if I were hearing him say the words again, right at my side.

Don’t look back…I’ll find you.

With an unbearable emptiness burning in my chest, I turned from Atlas and made my way toward shore. Without Jackson.
