Oh man, did I score BIG this past week! What I lack for in quantity (it was a busy week) I made up for in quality. The first book I bought was Under the Never Sky by Veronica Rossi. (I actually bought the eBook for my NOOK): GoodReads | Amazon WORLDS KEPT THEM APART. DESTINY BROUGHT THEM TOGETHER. Aria has lived her whole life in the protected dome of Reverie. Her entire world confined to its spaces, she’s never thought to dream of what lies beyond its doors. So when her mother goes missing, Aria knows her chances of surviving in the outer wasteland long enough to find her are slim. Then Aria meets an outsider named Perry. He’s searching for someone too. He’s also wild – a savage – but might be her best hope at staying alive. If they can survive, they are each other’s best hope for finding answers My second score of the week was The Fault in Our Stars by John Green. An autographed copy at that! See, I had the honor and benefit of attending John Green’s The Fault in Our Stars Tour this past weekend, where hundreds of Nerdfighters converged to celebrate the two men behind the Vlog Brothers, John and Hank Green. The event was, in a word, amazing and more coverage of it will be posted soon, over on Random Ramblings. So, without further ado… GoodReads...

Today, I have a bit of a haul! The first book is Mocked by Faithby Michele Richard. This was sent to me by the publisher, The Writer’s Coffee Shop for my review. (Review coming soon!) For Alexia Cross and Justin McNear, things are not what they seem.  Both were born and raised in hidden, gated communities.  A place where time virtually stands still and marriages are arranged by parents before a child’s 18th birthday. Alexia is destined to be her community’s first spinster.  In a last ditch effort, a husband is found.  The only complication?  He has no idea he has been betrothed. Will his history of dating outsiders help or hinder his relationship with his future wife? Justin McNear searched outside his church for the woman of his dreams. Returning home after failing, he knows he needs to rectify his life and his faith. Can a woman he’s never met make him whole again? Will this couple end up mocked by their own faith?  Follow Alexia and Justin through the trials and tribulations of finding, falling, and surviving each other’s love. It’s never easy saying “I do” to someone you don’t know. GoodReads | Amazon   The second book for my IMM Haul is an ARC, and the second in the Mocked by Faith series, Healing the Faith, also sent to me by the publisher. Healing the Faith will be available to the masses...

Breathtaking Literature

Today on Twitter, Writer’s Digest asked everyone to tell them our favorite scene of heightened suspense for a chance to win a copy of James Scott Bell’s new writing instruction book, Elements of Fiction Writing: Conflict & Suspense. This caused me to reflect on some of my favorite reads, both recent and long-past. One scene that came racing to the forefront was that moment in Mockingjay, when Peeta finally awakens from his hijacking and sees Katniss for the first time. I remember holding my breath, wondering what he would say, do, think, and feel. Would he remember Katniss? Would he declare his undying love for her? Would he know he had been hijacked? Would he remember anything? These are the moments in literature that I live for: moments that take my breath away. These are the moments when the gritty realities of life fall away and I am enveloped in another world that was born at the tip of a pen. ~ ~ ~ “Your favorite color…it’s green?” “That’s right.” Then I think of something to add. “And yours is orange.” “Orange?” He seems unconvinced. “Not bright orange. But soft. Like the sunset,” I say. “At least, that’s what you told me once.” “Oh.” He closes his eyes briefly, maybe trying to conjure up that sunset, then nods his head. “Thank you.” But more words tumble out. “You’re a painter. You’re a baker. You...

This week, I bought two eBooks for my NOOK that came highly suggested. The first is Book #1 in the My Blood Approves series by Amanda Hocking: Teenager Alice Bonham’s life feels crazy after she meets Jack. With his fondness for pink Chuck Taylors and New Wave, he’s unlike anyone she knows. Then she meets his brother, Peter. Even though he can’t stand the sight of her, she’s drawn to him. Falling for two guys isn’t even the worst of her problems. Jack and Peter are vampires, and Alice finds herself caught between love and her own blood. GoodReads | Amazon The second (not YA) is The Mill River Recluse by Darcie Chan: Disfigured by the blow of an abusive husband, and suffering her entire life with severe social anxiety disorder, the widow Mary McAllister spends almost sixty years secluded in a white marble mansion overlooking the town of Mill River, Vermont. Her links to the outside world are few: the mail, the media, an elderly priest with a guilty habit of pilfering spoons, and a bedroom window with a view of the town below. Most longtime residents of Mill River consider the marble house and its occupant peculiar, though insignificant, fixtures. An arsonist, a covetous nurse, and the endearing village idiot are among the few who have ever seen Mary. Newcomers to Mill River — a police officer and his...
